Making and Using a Recovery CD
(Any version of Windows)
BootIt NG
We shall be using a BootIt NG boot floppy for these functions. If you don't already have one, please follow these instructions to make one.
- Download the program from here as a ZIP file and use Winzip to expand it into a temporary (or permanent) folder.
- Run BOOTITNG.EXE which will invite you to create a boot floppy disc (or CD). Do so and don't forget to label it.
Making a Recovery CD
- Put the BootIt floppy in the floppy drive and boot the system.
- Cancel the Set Up screen.
- Click the Partition Work button.
- Click the HD0 button in the left margin and select the first entry.
- Select CDz in the left margin and select the burner in the list.
- Click Paste and follow instructions. These might ask you to insert more CDs from time to time. If so, it would be good to label them as 1,2,3 etc. This operation can take up to half an hour or so per CD on an older PC, so go put the kettle on.
- When asked if you want to do a byte for byte check, agree and follow orders.
Job done. Remove the floppy disc and any CDs and reboot. Don't forget to label the CDs properly including the date.
Using a recovery CD
This procedure will completely
destroy the contents of the partition and replace them with the contents of the CD(s). Unless you're sure you
want to proceed, don't.
- Put the BootIt floppy in the floppy drive and boot the system.
- Cancel the Set Up screen.
- Click the Partition Work button.
- Load the (first) backup CD into a drive.
- Click the CDz button in the left margin and select the same drive.
- Click Image and then Recover and obey instructions.
- Select HD0 in the left margin and select the partition to be restored - probably the first one.
- Click Paste and follow instructions.
Job done. Remove the floppy disc and any CDs and reboot.
